The states that will party hardest this St. Patrick’s Day
Sláinte! Everyone’s Irish on St. Patrick’s Day… especially if your town is so cold that you’re running to your nearest pub for a pint and some warm company! To prove it, the Tenor team sifted through their over 12 billion monthly searches and found that the states with the coldest weather do indeed use the most alcohol-related GIFs, among other fun facts.
Findings
Tenor found that the “drunkest” state on St. Patty’s day is Wyoming, seeing a 106% spike in ‘drunk’ searches compared to the national average. Closely following are Montana (+78%), Minnesota (+68%), Iowa (+52%) and Michigan (+42%).
So one beer led to a few and now you’re dealing with the consequences, right? Odds are if you live in Rhode Island you probably are — Tenor found the state is the #1 hungover state the day after St. Patty’s day, seeing a 107% spike compared to the national average in “hungover” GIF searches. Also suffering from the booze blues: New Hampshire (+94%), Montana (+94%), Nebraska(+72%) and North Dakota (+70%).
Don’t worry — hangovers don’t last forever. Americans bounce back from a day of drinking with only approximately 20% of those searching for “drunk” GIFs on St.Patty’s day also searching for “hungover” GIFs the following day.
As for the top 5 St.Patrick’s day GIFs, we keep it pretty traditional.

Looking more broadly at alcohol-related GIF searches, Tenor found that the Western states are typically the most hungover, despite only leading the US in searches for “tequila” searches. Tenor also found that those in the Midwest search for Beer & Whiskey the most, those in the Northeast for Wine & Cocktail and those in the South for Bourbon.
There were some surprises when it came to specific states; Tenor found that Hawaiians use “margarita” GIFs the least, and Alaskans (!) use “margarita” GIFs the most. Also, “cool” capital New York rated last in the US for searches for “whiskey” GIFs — are hipster tastes changing?
The tamest states when it comes to alcohol GIFs? The Southern states and Utah tend to use the least drinking-related GIFs.

As for this year’s celebration, Tenor predicts that the #1 St. Patrick’s Day GIF this year will be A Happy Dancing Leprechaun.
